Requirements

In general, most professional schools, particularly medical and dental programs, require four years of basic sciences which include laboratories:

  • General Chemistry (Chem 141-142)
  • Organic Chemistry (Chem 201-202)
  • Physics I (Phys 141; Corequisite: Mathematics 141) and Physics II (Physics 142)
  • One year of intro-level biology (several courses in biology may satisfy this requirement)
For some medical schools an additional course or courses in biology and chemistry may be required. A year of mathematics, usually calculus and/or statistics, as well as a year of English, is strongly recommended and sometimes required. The MCAT will require a background in biochemistry (Chem 390), as well as knowledge of concepts in psychology and sociology; therefore Psychology 141, Introduction to Psychological Science, and Sociology 101, Introduction to Sociology, are strongly recommended.

All requirements should be taken at an accredited college/university in the US or Canada, with grades reported on a US/Canadian transcript. It is not recommended that required courses be taken in a study abroad program. All requirements should be taken for a grade, not PDF. Many schools require C or better grades and will not accept a C- to fulfill prerequisites. Please be aware that all courses taken at the undergraduate level will be reported in the application process, this includes courses taken at other institutions.

It is up to the individual medical schools to determine which courses will satisfy the prerequisite coursework. Some may not accept courses taken online or in study abroad programs. Please be sure to research the schools you are interested in applying to in order to ensure you are meeting their requirements.

Class sizes at Bard vary, with the maximum size typically being about 24 and the minimum typically about six (except for classes in the performing arts or tutorials that may be individual or in groups of two or more students).

It is very important to consult the Medical School Admissions Requirements Official Guide (MSAR) or the individual school websites to determine the exact requirements for admission to each medical school.
