About Bard Early Colleges

Bard Early Colleges are founded on the belief that many high-school–age students are eager and ready for the intellectual challenges of a college education. Bard Early Colleges act on this belief by providing younger scholars with a tuition-free, credit-bearing college course of study in the liberal arts and sciences following the 9th and 10th grades. Students are taught by college faculty in seminar classes; they receive up to 60 college credits and an associate in arts (A.A.) degree from Bard College alongside a high school diploma.

Now in its second decade, the Bard Early College network includes campuses in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens, New York City; Hudson, New York, New Orleans, Louisiana; Newark, New Jersey; Cleveland, Ohio; Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

The Dean of Students is expected to collaborate with the Bard Early College school leader and other administrators, and the larger school staff; and to teach one class each semester.
Responsibilities of the position include:
  • Oversee the admissions program for the Bard Early College campus
  • Oversee the implementation and monitoring the school's attendance procedures
  • Oversee the coordination of the work of the guidance department and College Transfer Office
  • Oversee the Learning Commons and other student support services
  • Oversee student activities and athletics;
  • Monitor and resolve code of conduct issues;

Qualifications

The Dean of Students’ professional and academic experience should span both secondary and post secondary teaching and administration, and, where relevant, scholarship. Candidates should be eager to work in an innovative and academically rigorous school setting; they should be practical and flexible and should be advocates for liberal arts education. Because the Dean must communicate effectively to a variety of audiences, excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as tact and sensitivity in dealing with students, staff, faculty, parents and the wider community are required. A deep commitment to the school is expected. 

The successful candidate for the position will possess the following characteristics and qualifications:
  • Experience in an early college (preferred)
  • Interest in working with urban students (required); experience working with urban students (preferred)
  • Masters or Doctorate in a liberal arts and sciences discipline (corresponding to the fields available for study within the Bard curriculum)
  • Scholarship and engagement in field of study since attainment of terminal degree
  • Prior teaching experience, preferably with both college and high school students required
  • Prior administrative experience in an educational setting, preferably in a leadership role (required)
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Professional written and oral communication skills
