This program is designed to provide staff with the opportunity to broaden their knowledge, skills, capabilities and experience to enhance their careers and professional development at the college. Mentoring is an effective process for supporting staff to navigate their career path, to understand and access institutional policies and processes, and to increase confidence and competence in undertaking various role-specific activities at Bard.

Our Purpose

Our Purpose

The purpose of the Bard Mentoring Pilot Program is to assist with the onboarding of new employees into our institution. This voluntary program strives to build a stronger, more cohesive community by providing new employees with personal connections and information that will assist in their smooth transition into the Bard community. It aims, in the spirit of Bard values, to encourage open interactions and freedom of inquiry between staff. 

Our Vision

Mentoring is an important element of employee support programs at Bard, and is complemented by other formal and informal programs. The mentor serves as a helpful (but not the only) resource to assist new employees with the transition to life at Bard. The one-on-one personal relationship between mentor and mentee is important for fostering mutual trust; the program team will make every effort to match current employees with new employees based on the responses on the program’s mentor/mentee application forms.

Like our student body, the employees at Bard are diverse and so are their specific needs. The program will be supportive of all new hires and aims to focus on the distinct challenges underrepresented groups may encounter in navigating their professional life. For groups historically and persistently underrepresented in higher education environments (such as people of color, women and LGBTQ identifying people) mentoring has been shown to have a significant and positive impact on retention, advancement and professional growth. The pilot program will aim to match those interested in receiving support based on identity characteristics as well as professional development interests. As Bard gains ground in attracting staff from a diversity of backgrounds and experiences, our aim is to insure that a commitment to equity and inclusion are an integral component of new staff development and retention. The Council for Inclusive Excellence, a primary driver of institutional diversity, equity and inclusion work, joins with Bard Human Resources to ensure that our institutional approach to supporting and developing new staff is intersectional, inclusive and equitable.

  • Develop leadership talent in historically underrepresented populations
  • Support an innovative work environment
  • Create an internal support network 
  • Foster meaningful, inclusive relationships across the college

Information for New Employees (Mentees)

  • Is this program for me?
    The Staff Mentoring Pilot Program is a voluntary program available to all new full-time employees based at Bard Annandale. This program gives you the opportunity to meet other professionals within the College, but outside your work area to help build a social and professional network at Bard.
  • What are the benefits?

  • How do I get Started?
    New employees will receive an online form to opt in to the mentoring program in their new hire package.  Matches will be made by the Mentoring Committee.

How does it work?

The Matching Process

Finding the best mentee/mentor match is key to making the Mentoring Program successful. Mentors will be paired with mentees based on a variety of different factors including:

  • Individual needs and goals of new employees
  • Mutual availability of mentors and mentees
  • Similarities and differences that are suitable for an ideal match

The First Meeting

Once a mentor is assigned to you, they will reach out to you to set up a meeting. It is best if you agree to set up a regular meeting schedule that will work for both of you.

Completing the Program

The informal mentoring process is expected to last twelve (12) months, after which you may choose to conclude with the program. Active mentors will be encouraged to take on a new mentee once the year has ended. 

Information for Current Employees (Mentors)

  • How will I be matched with a Mentee?
    Mentors and mentees are matched by a panel of CIE committee members and representatives from Bard Human Resources. Matches will be notified via the committee. The Program provides funding for mentors and mentees to have an introductory lunch.  Following the lunch, mentors and mentees can establish regular meetups.
  • How do I get nominated to be a Mentor?
    Mentors will be nominated to serve based on recommendation from their department supervisor. The CIE will be informed of the nominations and will begin the nomination process. 
  • How do I apply to become a Mentor?
    Current employees who are interested in becoming a mentor to new employees should complete the form below. The CIE committee with review your application and match you with a Mentee.
