Mozart as Performer-Composer: A Reinterpretation
Mozart’s extraordinary abilities as a pianist and violinist are well known, yet few studies have succeeded in demonstrating how his performing experience influenced his compositions. In this talk, I examine the role of performance in Mozart’s musical thought — not from a biographical perspective, but through the content and structures of his works. Topics include the interface of (and, occasionally, tensions between) his piano fingering preferences and his melodic style; the improvisation protocols that shaped his larger-scale harmonic structures; and, most of all, the aesthetic functions of his embellishments. I also touch upon the role of improvisation in the stylistic evolution of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century music, as well as the relationship between musical analysis and performance.
