My discussion will introduce the two trajectories of my present research on gender and the theory and practice of Tibetan Buddhist Chöd. The first trajectory is based in archival and text critical work and traces how important male figures adopted and adapted the teachings of Machik Labdrön, the female systematizer of Chöd, to their own traditions. The second trajectory is based in field research and explores how Buddhist women—lay people and celibate renunciants, Asian Buddhists and western converts—carry on this transmission through their practice of Chöd in the contemporary world.
