Marking Israeli Independence Day and Nakba Day
This coming Wednesday, the 11th of May, is the date that the Israeli Day of Independence falls on this year. For Palestinian refugees, this day is better known as Nakba Day, or The Day of The Catastrophe. Recognizing the ambivalent nature of this historic event and the need to recognize the different narratives that this historic day commemorates, we would like to forego the traditional, unilateral Independence Day celebration and offer instead to host an event of a more conciliatory nature. This is not a political rally, yet it is our hope that people of all political opinions feel welcome and are comfortable, if they so choose, to engage in a discussion not about who is right or wrong, but about peace and reconciliation. Instead of this day continuing to entrench divergent narratives of what happened in 1948, let us makes this a day of coming together and engaging with one another. In Israel it is a tradition to have a BBQ on this day. We invite everyone to join us for a BBQ dinner at Cruger Village Quad at 6pm on Wednesday the 11th. We will be serving both carnivorous and vegetarian options. Feel free to come by for a bite to eat or to show your support of this pluralistic event.
Sincerely,
The Hebrew Language Program and the JSO
