What functions do facial expressions of emotion have? That is, why do we honestly advertise our subjective emotional and motivational states conspicuously on our faces? Here, I will present a program of research investigating the credibility hypothesis – that facial expressions of emotion are, in part, designed to increase the credibility of the verbal and/or written statements they accompany. Behavioral findings in response to happy, angry, sad, and fearful expressions will be discussed, as will directions for future research.McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School
