Sophia Choukas-Bradley, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry
After providing a brief overview of the biopsychosocial changes that underlie adolescents’ peer relationships and risky behaviors, Dr. Choukas-Bradley will present the results of several empirical studies related to peer and social media influences on adolescent health. First, she will discuss her work on the roles of social status (e.g., popularity) and ethnicity in adolescents’ development of alcohol use over the high school years. Next, she will present a study that paired an experimental paradigm with a longitudinal design, in order to examine social norms and peer influence susceptibility as predictors of adolescents’ sexual behavior. Finally, she will discuss her line of work focused on the role of social media in adolescents’ interpersonal relationships and mental health; she will briefly present results from several recent studies that examined associations between social media use and adolescents’ dating relationships, sexual behaviors, symptoms of depression, and self-objectification.For more information, call 845-758-7224, or e-mail [email protected].
