he study of social cognition is broadly concerned with how individuals attend to, perceive, interpret, and remember aspects of their social worlds. This talk will focus on two lines of empirical inquiry that seek to understand how aspects of social cognition can cause, perpetuate, or arise from psychopathology. First, perceptions of high levels of criticism in close relationships has been shown to predict poor clinical outcomes transdiagnostically. This talk will consider why this is the case, with a focus on the cognitive mechanisms underlying perceptions of criticism. Second, this talk will consider how affective processes interact with social cognition in individuals with personality pathology. For both lines of inquiry, insights will be offered into the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of psychopathology. For more information, call 845-758-7224, or e-mail [email protected].
