"The Hudson Valley Watershed Under a Lens: Discovery of a Cohort of Violacein Producing Bacteria"
by Professor Brooke Jude
The Hudson Valley Watershed is populated by native and invasive species of plants, fish, amphibians, microbes and more. Of interest for Professor Jude's research is the high number of distinct bacterial strains that produce violacein, a violet pigment that has a wide number of killing properties. This compound has the capacity to kill an invasive chytrid fungus that is currently eliminating large numbers of amphibians worldwide. In this seminar Professor Jude will describe the current status of a watershed mapping project she is working on, in conjunction with Bard students as well as local school districts. As this seminar takes place in a research lab, you will get to try your hand at plating actual water samples to monitor for violacein producing strains. This lab experience will also include various microscope stations to learn to stain and image the bacterial isolates, as well as view the actual chytrid fungus as well as a second infection model we are currently developing in the lab. These experiences will demonstrate first-hand how data is collected and what projects are underway to develop biotherapeutics for a potential chytrid outbreak.by Professor Brooke Jude
