The Future of Writing in the Digital Age: Postprint Productions and Asemic Writing
Tuesday, October 31, 2017
Henderson 106 (Mac Lab)
3:00 am – 5:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
This workshop will explore the implications of the changed nature of alphabetic writing in digital technologies, where the surface inscription is generated through layers of software and hardware. As printing technologies move into postprint, the fundamental nature of what constitutes “the text” transforms from human-only legibility to the mixed ecology of cognitive assemblages. For contemporary literature, this is often represented as a crisis in the human ability to read, write, and understand alphabetic language. This linguistic crisis is at the center of two contemporary novels, The Silent History and The Word Exchange, both of which entwine concerns about the obsolescence of print with the obsolescence of humanity as we know it. The connections of these texts to renewed interest in asemic writing will also be discussed. 3:00 am – 5:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
