We can better understand depressed mood by understanding the underlying self-schemas, the set of beliefs and generalizations about the self that stems from past experience. These self-schemas are theorized to influence how incoming information is processed. Further, we know that a negative self-schema can affect how we feel about ourselves and, more generally, affect our mood. How does this work as a mechanism of maintaining depression? How can we better understand this biased thinking and modify it? This talk will propose answers to these questions by linking several studies that focus on our positive and negative views of ourselves.University of Texas-Austin
