Discrepancy theory is a subject with a rich history and deep connections to many areas of mathematics. Originating from simple problems about sequences of numbers, it has recently attracted significant renewed interest. The question it asks is seemingly innocent: how uniformly distributed can the terms of a sequence be and what is a good way to measure this notion? As we will discover together, a precise answer is much more challenging than posing the question - it requires notions from probability, number theory, approximation theory, geometry, and harmonic analysis. My talk will focus on the history of this subject and its relationship to various other fields. We will discuss the classical theory, some recent developments, and potential open problems that would be suitable for research projects. No background will be assumed beyond single variable calculus.
