This lecture explores the historical and artistic significance of the Kereakoglow Collection, a recently-discovered compilation of music manuscripts produced in the early 20th century by a Greek bandleader from the island of Lesvos. The author's performative, improvisational approach to notating a staggering variety of pieces from Turkish, Greek, and European traditions challenges notions of a dichotomy between oral and written culture, links the collection to modern performance practice, and gives us concrete musical evidence of the pluralistic ideals of the late Ottoman world.5:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
