by Professor Thomas Wild
"But the Passage of Time Is Cruel"
On Letters, Exile, and Multilingual Imagination
Wolfgang Hildesheimer, eminent German writer and translator (Joyce, Djuna Barnes) and Gabriel Ibrahim Jabra, distinguished Arabic novelist and translator (Shakespeare, Faulkner) met in Jerusalem in the early 1940s. They participated in an almost impossible project: a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multi-lingual assemblage of people practicing the intellectual and political freedom of movement. Professor Wild will discuss letters and related texts around this encounter, which epigrammatically stimulate our thinking about pathways between cultures, languages and political imaginaries today. This Faculty Seminar also celebrates the book edition of collected letters by Wolfgang Hildesheimer, which Professor Wild recently published with Suhrkamp Verlag Berlin.
