This presentation offers an ethnography of quiet within Thailand’s Red Shirt movement. Its case studies include three producers of powerful (and yet not high-volume) sonic performance. The first of these is a man named Kittisak Janpeng, who meditated silently for many hours at a time in tribute to a slain Japanese photojournalist; second are young girls who survived dead or maimed guardians and then begged for donations on the street during gatherings; third is the Red Shirt singer Pom Krongthong, who lost her livelihood and suffered a serious illness before joining the Red Shirt movement full-time. Each of these embodied figures of pity in their sonic performances. For more information, call 845-758-6822, or e-mail [email protected].
