On Thursday, March 22nd, 2018 the Faculty Colloquium Series is pleased to host Joshua Dubler for a talk titled "Memorializing Abolition: What Berlin Hohenschönhausen has to teach Rikers Island."12:30 pm – 1:30 pm EDT/GMT-4
The prison is a historically contingent institution. Not too long ago there were no prisons, and someday, perhaps soon, there will be no prisons once again. Once the prison has been abolished, how will prisons be memorialized? This talk thinks through some of what memorials to the Nazi and Soviet regimes have to contribute to this exercise of moral imagination.
A 2017-18 Research Associate at Bard College Berlin, Joshua Dubler is author of Down in the Chapel: Religious Life in an American Prison (FSG, 2013). He is presently completing a co-authored manuscript entitled Break Every Yoke: Religion, Justice, and the Abolition of Prisons.
