Shortly after their introduction in the 1980s, McDonald's Chicken McNuggets were sold in packs of 6, 9, and 20. Are you wondering about the numbers of Chicken McNuggets that we can order without breaking any packages, or whether there are different ways to order your favorite number of Chicken McNuggets? What about the maximum number of Chicken McNuggets that we cannot order if we use only packs with 6, 9, or 20 pieces? Come and find out: in this talk, we will introduce numerical monoids to answer these questions, and we will investigate some of the interesting problems related to non-unique factorization in the Chicken McNugget monoid.University at Buffalo
