Professor Whitney Slaten will give a brief lecture entitled, "Talking Drums: Speech Surrogacy, African Retentions, and American Music” that will highlight the musical and linguistic cultural expressions of West African ’talking drum’ traditions, as well as how to listen to similar musical and extramusical expressions in instrumental performances of jazz and American music.
