"The Neural Basis of Pre-conditioning to Oxygen Deprivation in C. elegans"
Neurons need oxygen to work, and insufficient supply of oxygen (hypoxia), or the complete lack of it (anoxia), can cause neuronal dysfunction or even death. In some animals, including a soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, a mild stress prior to more severe hypoxic or anoxic event (known as “pre-conditioning”) can protect neurons from oxygen deprivation, and improve their survival. The mechanisms of this protection, and the overall role of nervous system in pre-conditioning to oxygen deprivation, are however not well understood. In this talk, we will learn about C. elegans as a model to study effects of oxygen deprivation on the neural system, and will discuss new results in this field.
