La Musique Sacrée: Musical Traditions of Notre Dame de Paris—From the Middle Ages to the Fire of 2019
The Cathedral of Notre Dame is the lodestone that tips the compass of every visitor to Paris. In addition to its seminal Gothic architecture, the Cathedral claims a unique place in Western music, first as the birthplace of polyphonic vocal composition and later as the standard-setting center of keyboard improvisation, symbolized by the Cathedral’s long list of distinguished organists and its magnificent pipe organ that has been witness to six centuries of musical development. A cultural artifact that survived the French Revolution, two world wars, and even the devastating fire of April 15, 2019, the organ symbolizes the enduring strength of the Notre Dame musical tradition. This lecture will present an overview of the music practices born in this sacred space and provide an intimate perspective on the organ, the music, and the musicians who have filled the Cathedral’s vast nave with glorious sounds. For more information, call 845-758-6822, or e-mail [email protected].
