On September 18, 2019 from 12:30pm, Bard College Berlin is delighted to host a guest talk by Syrian author Mustafa Khalifa.
Khalifa will speak about his novel The Shell. Memoirs of a Hidden Observer (2008) as a metaphor of life in Syria in its most extreme form, in the torture prison of Tadmor where Khalifa himself spent 12 years of his life. He will discuss with the BCB community the novel’s historical, political, and biographical realities as well as its literary construction, and what it can reveal about Assad’s Syria specifically and about individuals and societies facing absolute oppression universally.
Khalifa will be accompanied by his German translator Larissa Bender.
The event is organized by faculty member Marion Detjen, who recently published a review of Khalifa's novel on ZEIT Online.
This event takes place in the frame of and with support from the Mellon-funded Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement, and Education
