In topology, there is the notion of a linking number of two oriented disjoint curves in affine 3-space. An algebraic generalization is the concept of a height pairing, which lies at the confluence of arithmetic and geometry. We explain a motivating example situation in an algebraic geometric setting. This talk is targeted to a general audience. For more information, call 845-758-6822, or e-mail [email protected].
