Campus decarbonization projects planned and proven, including how they are financed and implemented
Decarbonization is the latest buzzword around energy and climate solutions. What do campus decarbonization projects look like on the ground? How are they financed and implemented? Which technologies are proven, and which are still in development? This panel will discuss their current and future decarbonization projects and plans across campuses from urban to rural, liberal arts to land grant institutions. Bard College's Energy Manager, Dan Smith, will present on their recently developed campus-wide Climate & Energy Master Plan (CEMP). The plan includes targeted decarbonization projects such as geothermal conversions of existing large facilities, building performance upgrades, and on-site renewables, as well as order-of-magnitude cost estimates for full-campus transformation. Financing options will be discussed, including ways to optimize end-of-life equipment replacement and third party financing opportunities such as energy- and infrastructure-as-a-service.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will discuss the new Better Climate Challenge (BCC) to support in universities’ emissions reduction journeys. Through the BCC, Bard has partnered with DOE to reduce portfolio-wide GHG emissions (scope 1 & 2) by at least 50% within 10 years. DOE provides technical assistance and opportunities to learn and share actionable best practices for carbon reduction across sectors. Three university representatives for this session are BCC partners that exemplify leadership in the field of decarbonization.
