Global Public Health Concentration at Bard
Public Health Faculty Adviser: Helen Epstein

Public health is a field of study and practice focused on promoting and protecting the health and wellbeing of populations. It involves efforts to prevent diseases, promote healthy behaviors, and address health disparities at the community and societal levels. Public health professionals work to improve the overall health of communities through a variety of strategies, policies, and interventions. Here are key aspects of public health:
  1. Health Promotion, Communication and Disease Prevention: Public health professionals develop and implement programs and initiatives to promote healthy behaviors, prevent illnesses, and encourage wellness. This may include initiatives related to nutrition, physical activity, smoking cessation, and vaccination campaigns. They use education and communication strategies to inform and empower communities about health issues. This involves creating awareness, providing health education materials, and leveraging various media to disseminate health-related information.
  2. Epidemiology: Epidemiologists study the distribution and determinants of diseases within populations. They investigate patterns of health and illness, identify risk factors, and contribute to the development of evidence-based public health interventions.
  3. Biostatistics and Informatics: are two key fields within public health that play critical roles in research, data analysis, and decision-making. They contribute to the understanding of health trends, the evaluation of interventions, and the development of evidence-based public health.
  4. Maternal and Child Health: a specialized field within public health that focuses on the wellbeing of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, as well as the health and development of infants, children, and adolescents. A multidisciplinary approach, involving healthcare providers, public health professionals, policymakers, and communities. By addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by mothers and children, these programs contribute to the improvement of population health and the overall well-being of families.
  5. Policy Development and Advocacy: Public health professionals work to influence and develop policies that support and promote health. This may involve advocating for laws and regulations related to issues such as food safety, clean air and water, and workplace safety.
  6. Environmental Health: Public health addresses environmental factors that can impact health, such as air and water quality, hazardous waste management, and the spread of infectious diseases. Professionals in this field work to minimize environmental risks and protect communities.
  7. Global Health: Public health efforts extend beyond national borders, with a focus on addressing global health challenges. This includes addressing infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and promoting health equity on a global scale.
  8. Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health: Public health professionals recognize and address the social determinants of health, which are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. Efforts are made to reduce health disparities and ensure that all individuals have an opportunity to achieve their highest level of health.
  9. Emergency Preparedness and Response: Public health agencies play a crucial role in preparing for and responding to public health emergencies, such as natural disasters, disease outbreaks, and other health crises.
Public health professionals may work in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, or private sector organizations. They collaborate with healthcare providers, policymakers, community leaders, and other stakeholders to create healthier communities and address public health challenges.
