On the northern end of campus, Ward Manor is a magnificent and picturesque 1916 manor with Manor Annex opened in 1926 as the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor expanded its services. These spaces became Bard student residences in the mid-1960s, with renovations in the early 21st century to add a full-service cafe space to the first floor.

Ward Manor House Amenities

  • Laundry

    Laundry

Laundry in Manor House & Manor Annex
Located within the what is known as the "Stone Porch" area of the first floor, the Manor Annex Laundry room contains two washers and two dryers and a folding table.

If you experience issues with any of the laundry machines, complete a service request at the link below.  Great neighbors leave a note on any malfunctioning machines to aid in others avoiding the same issue. Our laundry machines are owned and serviced by an outside contractor, yet our Buildings and Grounds team manages the laundry room and relays any machine issues to the outside contractor.

    B&G SERVICE REQUEST

    Coinless Laundry
All laundry rooms are equipped with both modern and high-efficient front load washers and dryers. Laundry is part of the room and board cost, so the machines do not require payment to cycle during the academic year.  This coinless laundry feature allows residents to run as many loads as they need without overloading the machines or incurring more cost.

    Detergent Choice + Sustainable Practices
Please note that our machines require the HE (high efficiency) laundry detergent. Detergent pods are recommended for their portability and lack of spills. We also recommend the use of a garment bag when washing delicates and small items such as socks.

    SUSTAINABLE LIVING PRACTICES
  • Climate Control

    Climate Control

Manor is heated through hot water radiators below the windows.  Some adjustment is available room to room, overall the temperature is zoned.  Manor does not have air conditioning and we encourage students to bring fans for personal cooling.  Note, we are not able to accommodate portable or window air conditioning units throughout due to the electrical load.
  • Parking

    Parking

    Parking at Manor
Located across from neighboring Robbins Hall, the Robbins lot provides ample parking for residents of both Manor and Robbins.  The Manor House driveway parking is intended for use of patrons of the cafe and events in Manor House.

    Student Parking at Bard
Bard College maintains a pedestrian campus, yet all students have the ability to register 1 vehicle for on campus parking.  All motor vehicles (including motorcycles) must be registered with the Department of Safety and Security. Upon registration, students parking sticker indicates the approved lot(s) for the registered vehicle.  Learn more on the Department of Safety and Security’s website.

    VEHICLE POLICIES

    Guest Parking on Campus
Visitors and guests are expected to follow all parking regulations. All visitors and guests are required to display a Visitor Hang-Tag, available at the Department Safety and Security. Visitor and guest parking areas are so designated.
  • Room Security

    Room Security

    To enter the building:
You will utilize your Bard ID Card on the proximity sensor next to the front door.  During cafe operations and when events are hosted in the Manor Dining Room, the front door of Manor will be open.  For this reason, Manor residents swipe at two locations.  Each wing and the Stone Porch area (containing laundry, community kitchen, & lounge space) on the first floor has a security point to limit access to Manor residents.

    To enter your room:
Upon move-in you will be issued a brass key to your room door.  Note, residents are not permitted to duplicate any keys issued by the college.

    Locked Out?
If you are locked out, call security at 845.758.7460 for assistance 24/7.  Please note, there is a fine associated with being locked out of your room.   If you loose your brass key or ID card, Buildings & Grounds will cut you a new key or print a new ID card for you.  There is a cost associated with this, connect with B&G for the most up to date costs.

    Bathrooms

    Manor House Bathrooms
On the first floor of Manor House, there are two single-user restrooms with toilet and sink.  These restrooms services the Manor Cafe visitors in addition to residents.

While most rooms on the second & third floor feature private or semi private full bathrooms, several rooms utilize solo multi-user style restrooms.  These restrooms feature 1 shower or tub stall and one toilet stall with a sink; the space allows students to find privacy or allow sharing based on ones needs in the moment.  Both floors feature 1 restroom with tub and one restroom with shower.

    Manor Annex Bathrooms
28 rooms in Manor Annex feature half-baths (toilet & sink only) adjoining neighboring rooms, one room features a private full bathroom, 9 rooms do not have private bathrooms.

Each floor contains two single-user bathrooms along the hallway featuring a bathtub, sink, and toilet.

    Bathroom Cleanliness
Respect for the facilities is assumed in the collegiate setting, this is especially important in communal bathrooms.  These community bathrooms are cleaned by the Environmental Services team.  Cleanliness issues can be reported to the email below.  If an emergency occurs, 24/7 service is available by calling security at 845.758.7460.

    Bathroom Maintenance
If you should encounter plumbing or lighting issues in a bathroom, please report these to your Peer Counselor and/or complete a service request to have Buildings & Grounds address the issue.  Your vigilance towards leaks can help us cut down on water waste throughout campus.

  • Bedroom Finshes

    Bedroom Finshes

    Bedroom Flooring
Most rooms in Manor House feature the original hardwood floors.  Rooms in Manor annex feature a Vinyl Composite Tile of a white color with grey speckle.   Both flooring types allows for simple cleaning by residents throughout the year, talk with your roommate about bringing a broom and/or sweepers such as Swiffers; these are especially helpful in the winter months due to ice melt & salt being tracked into rooms.

    Bedroom Walls: Plaster
Most walls in bedrooms throughout Manor & Manor Annex are the original plaster, painted a shade white.  A few rooms feature the original wood and stone work; 3-4 rooms were split in the 1970’s and feature faux wood paneling.  We discourage students from using pins to hang decor as many residents find success with products such as command strips.  All bedrooms are painted a warm shade of white and residents are prohibited from painting their own rooms.  When decorating your room, New York State fire code does not allow fabric to hang on walls over ones bed.  Residents are also limited to covering only 25% of the walls in decoration to assure safe conditions.

William Ward Manor House
Ward Manor, circa 1967. The main house was built in 1918, while the Annex was added in 1929. William Ward donated the property (which extended to Tivoli) to a New York charitable organization that utilized the mansion as housing for seniors, while other buildings on the estate were used to accommodate summer camps for girls and boys, and vacation bungalows for city families of limited means. The senior home and camps closed in the late 1950s. A few years later, in 1963, Bard purchased a portion of the land, along with the Gatehouse, Manor, and Robbins House, effectively adding dormitory space for 150 students and several faculty families.
