Frequently Asked Housing Questions

If your question is not answered below, send an email to [email protected] and we will be delighted to reply with the answer.

  • Can students have a pet?
All pets must first be approved by the Office of Residence Life and with your future roommate(s). The College does not permit students to have dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits or birds. All pets must live in a cage or aquarium and must be in good health. Students wishing to have a pet that conforms to the above criteria must apply formally through Residence Life & Housing before bringing a pet to campus.

  • Can students have a phone in their rooms?
Residence hall rooms do not come equipped with an active phone line. However, the phone line in the room can be activated by request for local calling and calling card usage.  There are phones in the common areas of each residence hall that can make outgoing calls with a calling card. It is advised that you have a cell phone or calling card.
  • Can students have a refrigerator or microwave in their room?
You may either bring your own mini-fridge measuring no larger that 3.2 cubic feet, or rent one. Stand alone microwaves are not allowed in student rooms except for a microwave/mini-fridge combo that can be rented. This unit has a feature that shuts off the mini-fridge when the microwave is in use to prevent circuit overloads. You may rent through My Micro Fridge which offers convenient delivery and pick up to campus.

    Micro-Fridge Rental Program
  • Can students have guests or visitors?
Students must first get permission from the roommate(s) to have a guest stay overnight. Additionally, the guest must be registered at Safety and Security. Guests are only allowed to stay for up to 3 consecutive nights.
  • Can students ship some things before move in?
Yes, if you have things you need to send to campus before you move in please send them to the following address:

All packages will be sent to, and can be picked up at, Buildings and Grounds - Shipping and Receiving.

  • Can students smoke in their rooms?

  • Can students store things on campus?
No. The College cannot provide on campus storage for any student items over breaks or during the academic year.

Looking for an easy way to store your stuff? Meet our official storage partner, Dorm Room Movers. They will send you boxes and tape to pack. Their professional, and insured movers will pick up your items, store them for the summer and deliver back when you return. They can also help you ship boxes to and from campus. Dorm Room Movers has moved over 40,000 students over the past 10 years and are BBB A+ accredited.
  • How do students get around campus?
While most students find it simplest to walk around campus, there is also a shuttle service that runs a loop around campus and between the towns of Red Hook and Tivoli. Many students also find it helpful to have a bike on campus. Based on available space bikes can be stored on-campus during the winter months for a nominal fee.
