While our campus telephone systems are designed primarily for on-site operations, the features listed below can assist users during this period while many are working remotely. If your particular department's needs are not met by these features, please email [email protected] to discuss other options.

Instructions for Connecting Remotely to Telecom Services

Accessing Voicemail Remotely

Your campus voicemail account can be accessed remotely to check messages and record new greetings.  This feature works from all standard landline telephones and most cell phones.  Select cellular and VoIP-based landline telephones output touch tones that are not recognized by the campus voicemail system.  If this problem occurs on calls from your cellular phone, you may try turning WiFi-Calling off or changing your LTE setting to 'data only'.  If you still cannot access your voicemail account remotely, please email [email protected] so an appropriate solution can be provided to work around this issue.

During this period, users may want to record a new greeting that conveys pertinent information to callers, such as:

  • The office/department is currently closed/operating remotely due to COVID19 protocols
  • An email address the department can be reached at
  • An alternative number the department can be reached at

Forwarding Your Bard Extension

Users may forward calls from their campus extension to their home or cellular telephone.  Calls forwarded from campus extensions will have the following caller ID information:  Bard College, 845-758-6822.  It is important to note that if a campus extension is forwarded and calls go unanswered, callers will be sent to the home or cellular telephone's voicemail account, not back to the Bard voicemail account.

This feature must be programmed from the user's physical office telephone or by Bard Telecom technicians.  If users no longer have access to their office during this period, please email [email protected] with the extension and the phone number calls should be forwarded to.

Protecting Your Personal Phone Number

Users may not want to show their personal home or cellular telephone caller ID information when making business calls.  For most networks and carriers, entering *67 before dialing a phone number will block your caller ID information from being sent.  Instead, Caller ID information will read 'Anonymous Call' or 'Private Call'.  It should be noted that this feature does not work when dialing certain 1-800 numbers or contacting emergency services.

Conference Calls

Up to eight-party conference calls can be provided on a first come, first serve reservation basis.  A direct dial-in number will be provided to the organizer of the conference call to be distributed to the participants.  Participants can dial-in to the conference call from on-campus or off-campus telephones.  To reserve a conference call, please email [email protected] with the date, time and an approximate duration of the conference.
